It amazes me, how selfish the humans can be! In times of adversity, when we see others suffer we empathize them. Or at least we believe so. But what I rather think is that we humans are the most self centered creatures. If you really think about it, the emotions that occur to us are caused by our own discomfort. We contemplate the situation as if it is happening to us. And thus we sympathize ourselves.
We are slaves of our own imagination...
